چکیده

In this paper we present a reduced basis method for the parametrized Fokker–Planck equation associated with evolution of Finitely Extensible Nonlinear Elastic (FENE) dumbbells in a Newtonian solvent for a (prescribed) extensional macroscale flow. There are two new important ingredients: a projection–based POD–Greedy sampling procedure for the stable identification of optimal reduced basis spaces; and a finite–time a posteriori bound for the error in the reduced basis prediction of the two outputs of interest — the optical anisotropy and the first normal stress difference. We present numerical results for stress–conformation hysteresis as a function of Weissenberg number and final time that demonstrate the rapid convergence of the reduced basis approximation and the effectiveness of the a posteriori error bounds.

Existence of Global Weak Solutions to Fokker–planck and Navier–stokes–fokker–planck Equations in Kinetic Models of Dilute Polymers

This survey paper reviews recent developments concerning the existence of global weak solutions to Fokker–Planck equations with unbounded drift terms, and coupled Navier–Stokes–Fokker–Planck systems of partial differential equations, that arise in finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) type kinetic models of incompressible dilute polymeric fluids in the case of general noncorotational flow.

A Heterogeneous Alternating-direction Method for a Micro-macro Dilute Polymeric Fluid Model

We examine a heterogeneous alternating-direction method for the approximate solution of the FENE Fokker–Planck equation from polymer fluid dynamics and we use this method to solve a coupled (macro-micro) Navier–Stokes–Fokker–Planck system for dilute polymeric fluids. In this context the Fokker–Planck equation is posed on a high-dimensional domain and is therefore challenging from a computationa...

Kinetic Models of Dilute Polymers: Analysis, Approximation and Computation

We review recent analytical and computational results for macroscopic-microscopic beadspring models that arise from the kinetic theory of dilute solutions of incompressible polymeric fluids with noninteracting polymer chains, involving the coupling of the unsteady Navier– Stokes system in a bounded domain Ω ⊂ Rd, d = 2 or 3, with an elastic extra-stress tensor as right-hand side in the momentum...

Development of a rheological model for polymeric fluids based on FENE model

Rheological models for polymer solutions and melts based on the finitely extensible non-linear elastic (FENE) dumbbell theory are reviewed in this study. The FENE-P model that is a well-known Peterlin approximation of the FENE model, indicates noticeable deviation from original FENE predictions and also experimental results, especially in the transient flow. In addition, both FENE and FENE-P mo...
